5 Essential Principles of Defensive Driving

May 10, 2023

While you can't control other drivers, you can take steps to keep yourself safe when you're on the road. Defensive driving can help you react quickly to dangerous situations, reducing the risk of accidents. According to the NHTSA, more than 10,142 drunk driving accidents resulted in fatalities in 2019, so protecting yourself is critical. If you could use a defensive driving course, remember these guidelines when you're behind the wheel.

1. Avoid Distracted Driving

Even minor distractions can reduce a driver's reaction time. In addition to putting away your phone, you should avoid eating, drinking, and other activities while driving. Keep both hands on the wheel, and ensure your eyes are always on the road.

2. Obey Traffic Laws

Traffic laws are there for a reason. Speeding up when a light turns yellow or going over the speed limit on an empty road might not seem like a big deal, but these behaviors could have serious consequences. You should also avoid unsafe practices like tailgating and always use the proper traffic signals.

3. Be Prepared

If you take a defensive driving course, the class will likely stress the importance of preparing for potential hazards. You may encounter erratic drivers or other dangerous conditions while driving. Scan the road ahead so that you can spot potential threats and respond to them. Remember to also always wear a seat belt, even if you're only going a few miles down the road.

4. Give Yourself Space

An essential principle of defensive driving is to create plenty of space around your vehicle. If the vehicle in front of you suddenly slams on the brakes, you'll have ample time to stop. Creating space is especially important during rainy or snowy weather when vehicles are harder to stop. Monitor the distance between your car and other vehicles and slow down if you're too close.

5. Show Extra Caution Around Intersections

Accidents are more likely to occur at intersections, so drivers should be cautious. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, around 50% of traffic injuries occur at intersections. Slow down as you approach the light and look for potential obstacles, even if the light is green. Yield to other drivers if you're not sure you have the right away.

While auto accidents are unfortunately common, safe driving is an excellent way to protect yourself. Taking a
defensive driving course can improve your awareness of the risks drivers face. It can protect you and the passengers in your vehicle. Contact LifeSwitch Driving Academy of Peachtree City, LLC today to learn more about defensive driving!
